HollyShorts

It's official we were selected to screen in the 9th Annual HollyShorts Film Festival this year.  So off we go to Mann's Chinese Theater.  Our screening is on August 20th, at 2:00pm.  Hope to see you there!

Distribution

It was never a goal we set out to achieve; getting distribution on our short film.  But low and behold it has happened.  We signed a non-exclusive licensing deal with Spiritual Cinema Circle who will feature the short as part of their June DVD collection.  We are thrilled beyond belief and humbled by the opportunity for our film to be shown to so many people.  Above and beyond that we are so satisfied that Spiritual Cinema Circle is the one to do this, because after all, like their name suggests, they cater to films that embody artistic sensibilities and also promote films that carry a strong message of positivity, compassion, and renewed hope.  Please see below to watch the trailer they put together for the DVD release, we think it's neat!  Also, if you happen to like good, heart warming, and independent cinema on a monthly basis, you should look into subscribing to their services!

It's Official.  Killer Whales has made it into another film festival.  We are proud to announce that we will be screening at the 16th Annual Dances with Films Film Festival here in Hollywood.  This is a particularly exciting festival for us because it is in our back yard and at Manns Chinese Theater!  We look forward to seeing all of our local friends at the screening.  Dates will be announced soon!
It's official!  Of Teaching Killer Whales has been selected to screen at the 19th Annual Sedona International Film Festival this February!  Please visit www.sedonafilmfestival.org for information about the screening times and other pertinent info regarding the festival.

In the can!

Producing a film, regardless of its length or scope is a difficult process. It is a lot like building a house. First you have to come up with the plan from an architect, a nice script in the case of film. Then you have to find the land, set up all the pieces into action and starting scratching dirt. I have found that much of the joy of filmmaking for me comes from the planning and production stages. That leaves post production as the odd man out. This is the part where all the silent aspects come to fruition. They say a good edit is one that doesn't draw attention to itself, yet fully incorporates the mood, tone, and helps push the story along in the way that it needs to. The same is true with music, sound mixing, mastering, etc. And this is the stage no one really thinks about, save for the few of us brave souls that endeavor to make projects like these. To go back to the previous metaphor, this is the stage where the walls are up, the plumbing is in the ground, and we just sit around for inspectors to come and make sure everything is up to code, and make small tweaks and changes along the way. It takes a long time, and sometimes people don't really understand all that goes into the process, they just want the keys to their new home, or in this case, to watch the completed film.
I am happy to report, however, that the begrudging labor intensive process of post production in all it's forms is now done and am happy to announce that the film is DONE! Well... not exactly. I don't know that it is ever done done. Now it's on to making press kits, planning a screening and strategically mapping and submitting to film festivals across the globe so that the film can get its best exposure. Still a lot of work to do, but at the very least, now we have a product. I am very proud of what we did for the little money we did it for. It would not have been possible without the generous monetary donations from friends, family, and strangers, as well as the more than generous donations of peoples time, energy, equipment, and other resources. Filmmaking is a team effort and we had one heck of one on this.
Stay tuned for updates on when and where you can see the film, hopefully you can make it out to the Premiere in Los Angeles, and if not, hopefully it will be screening at a festival near you in the coming year!

Diary of Fundraising Campaign: DAY 1

It was hard to put the page up on IndieGoGo. Hard for a lot of reasons really. I don't like asking people for money, whether it's for a good cause or not. I barely like asking people for money for work I complete. Maybe it's some sort of weird humility I have, or and undervaluing of my own worth, but it's always been a challenge.

I knew about IndieGoGo from friends and other projects I've worked on that have raised funds, and quite successfully, through the site and so it was intriguing of course. In the end, despite much deliberation, it came down to a simple fact: This film needs to be made. I need to make it just as much as it's message needs to be translated and seen by the world. So with a lot of care and thought, I put the page together and put it up last night, all the while butterflies stirring in my stomach for reasons that are still somewhat a mystery to me.

Today was an overwhelming day to say the least. Within almost 24 hours of going live with my campaign I have already raised $890. That's almost 10% of my total goal, and I have 49 days left. 16 donors came through today, some giving more than the minimum asked for donation and as each one came in, it almost brought tears to my eyes. I was elated. To think these people are seeing my vision and my goals and helping me because they believe in me is something that is having a profound impact on me. The support it brings is certainly not just monetary. Having a community of people, both family, friends, and colleagues alike get behind me in this way is refreshing and awe inspiring. The comments that many have left, or sent me privately have helped me understand that what I'm doing here is something truly important. This momentum of compassion is a sweeping one and I hope it continues on.

I am aware of the uphill battle that has just begun. Thankfully, I feel confident that my friends and family who haven't had time to donate yet, will, and that through continued promotion of, not too mention gentle pestering, I can reach my goal.

I rest tonight satisfied from the days outcome, and look forward to the next 49 days!
